Camping Recipes From Troops 589 & 229

"Kick the Can" Ice Cream

Equipment needed: 1 lb coffee can/lid, 3 lb coffee can/lid and duct tape

Crushed Ice
¾ cup rock salt
¾ cup whole milk
1 cup cream
1/3 cup sugar
½ teaspoon vanilla
Chocolate syrup

In 1 lb coffee can, combine milk, cream, sugar and vanilla.  Put the
plastic lid on the can and seal thoroughly with duct tape. (If the inner
lid isn't sealed well, the salt will ruin the ice cream.)  Place into
larger can.  Pack around with crushed ice and salt.  Put the plastic lid
on the larger can and seal with duct tape.  Roll the can back and forth
to a friend for ten minutes, then take the lid off, scrape the ice cream
off the sides and stir the mixture.  If it needs more freezing, drain
the water out of the larger can.  Re-seal the smaller can, and place it
back in the large can.  Pack with more ice and salt and roll for a
further five minutes.  Serves 2 -3.

Pineapple Upside-down Cake
(Made in Dutch Oven)
2 Tablespoons butter or margarine, melted
1 16oz can of pineapple slices, drained
1 8oz jar of maraschino cherries
½ cup brown sugar
1 box yellow cake mix, prepared according to package directions

Line the bottom of Dutch oven with aluminum foil.  Add butter or
margarine and arrange pineapple slices on top.  Set a maraschino cherry
in center of each pineapple slice.  Sprinkle brown sugar evenly over the
fruit.  Pour prepared cake batter over the fruit.
Place Dutch oven over 9 hot coals.  Cover with Dutch oven lid and place
15 hot coals on the top.  Bake, covered for 30 minutes or until golden
brown.
Lift cake out of the Dutch oven using the aluminum foil.  Tuck edges
underneath the cake.  Cool for 10 minutes.  Turn upside down.  Peel away
foil and serve.  Serves 12.

"Walking" Tacos

Snack bag of chips- Fritos, Doritoes, etc
Typical taco fixings- seasoned hamburger, chopped lettuce, tomatoes, shredded
cheese
Taco sauce
Sour Cream

Before opening snack bag of chips, crunch chips into smaller pieces.  Add taco
toppings right into bag on top of chips.  Eat taco out of bag with fork.  Girls
can "walk" around eating their tacos out of the bag, and keep mess to a minimum!

Junior Troop 649 took their first Field Trip of the year to Mary Ann's  Craft shop, located behind the Lighthouse Cafe in Dexter.  The girls made beaded bracelets with their names on them. Mary Ann does several different craft workshops including bees wax candles.  Her shop also offers a discount to GS troops on craft supplies!!!!
